Lee Mershon will be remembered as an excellent skier, boat driver, AWSA official, friend and family man. He was happily married to Bonnie O’Donnell Mershon for 36 years and had two daughters- Lisa Langenhennig and Christy Lee Gutierrez. Lee honorably served our country as a member of the US Coast Guard.

He arrived on the scene at the 1968 Eastern Regionals. His love of skiing expanded to show skiing, kite flying, jumping, and 3 event skiing. During a show, he flew a Delta Wing kite over the Mattapone River Bridge up to 1,000 feet high for the opening of the public boat landing in West Point, Virginia.

In the late 1960’s, Lee organized the Colonial Water Ski Club. Years later, he purchased a lake in Virginia which he developed into an excellent ski site known as Lee’s Lake. Lee’s accomplishments in the skiing world were many. 

In 1976, Lee obtained the senior judge rating and the following year, he obtained the senior driver rating. He also achieved the rating as a Pan Am slalom judge in 2012. As an AWSA official, he was a chief judge of several regional tournaments and the Nationals.  He also served on the AWSA Board of Directors and AWSA rules committee for many years.

As a skier, he was best known as an excellent slalom skier, setting the Men’s 3 national record in 1982 and the Men’s 5 national record in 1997. Lee was also a test driver and helped design and approve the ski boat known as the Ski Centurion. Lee strongly supported organized skiing in Virginia and the Eastern and Southern Regions for over 50 years. He was always thought of as a “go- to guy” if you needed help on anything at all.

Lee was born on July 20th, 1943 and sadly passed away in West Palm Beach, Florida on November 8, 2018.
