Cobe Mikacich to Be Inducted into the 2027 Water Ski Hall of Fame

The USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Foundation is proud to announce that wakeboarding champion and longtime industry innovator Cobe Mikacich will be inducted into the Water Ski Hall of Fame.

Mikacich’s influence on wakeboarding extends far beyond his competitive accomplishments. Throughout a career spanning more than three decades, he has helped advance the sport as an athlete, equipment designer, coach, entrepreneur and energetic ambassador who introduced wakeboarding to audiences across the country.

His competitive career was highlighted by winning the 2000 IWWF Wakeboard World Championship and the 2001 Peugeot Cup. Mikacich also earned podium finishes at many of wakeboarding’s most prominent events, including the Wakeboard World Championships, U.S. Open, Pro Wakeboard Tour, BoardStock and Pro Am Challenge.

His major competitive accomplishments include second place at the 1996 Wakeboard World Championships, third place at the 1998 Wakeboard World Championships and second place at the 2000 U.S. Open. He also earned multiple podium finishes on the Pro Wakeboard Tour throughout the 1990s and competed multiple times at the X Games and Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament.

Known for his progressive riding style, Mikacich invented several wakeboard tricks, including the F40, a wrapped toeside roll to blind, the crail tantrum and the wrapped switch roll to blind. He also played an important role in wakeboard equipment development. After designing Full Tilt’s first signature wakeboard, sales increased from approximately 160 boards to more than 8,000 in two seasons. Over the course of his career, Mikacich designed more than 30 signature pro model boards.

Mikacich was equally committed to growing the sport away from professional competition. For 13 years, he traveled across the country on the Fantastic Voyage and later the I Ride Tour. Driving a bus and towing a boat for several months each year, he conducted clinics for dealers and brought professional instruction directly to wakeboarders from coast to coast. His demanding schedule often included competing on weekends, driving through the night and coaching throughout the week.

In 2013, Mikacich and his wife, Tarah, founded Freedom Wake Park. During the decade they owned and operated the training facility, the park averaged approximately 2,500 lessons annually and was named the Water Sports Industry Association’s Camp or School of the Year three times.

Mikacich also developed patented products designed to make boating easier. He invented Hangtyte, a boat cover suspension system whose central concept is now widely used in boats equipped with towers. He later created Drop N Fill, a self supporting funnel designed to make fueling boats with gas cans simpler, cleaner and faster.

As an ambassador, Mikacich continually found creative ways to introduce new audiences to wakeboarding. He helped bring the sport to NASCAR through exhibitions on the infield lakes at Daytona and Homestead. Before online event coverage became commonplace, he created the “Pit Line,” a telephone service fans could call for professional tour results and rider interviews.

He also promoted professional events through radio appearances, media demonstrations and community outreach. His career has been documented through five magazine covers and appearances in numerous influential wakeboarding videos. Mikacich was also featured as a playable character in the video game Wakeboarding Unleashed.

One story from his career illustrates the character and generosity for which he is known. After winning the Peugeot Cup in Argentina, Mikacich received a cash equivalent because he could not bring the automobile awarded as the prize back to the United States. Rather than keep the entire amount, he divided it among the event’s finalists as a gesture of respect for the local riders and the significance of the competition.

“Cobe is one of the most charismatic, friendly and energetic people I have ever met,” said Chris Bischoff, Wakeboarding Hall of Fame inductee and Pro Wakeboard Tour director of operations. “His genuine stoke on life is contagious, and wherever he went everyone loved him. He is truly one of the greatest ambassadors this sport could have ever asked for.”

Mikacich’s previous honors include induction into the Wakeboarding Hall of Fame and Rio Americano High School Hall of Fame, the Legend Award and recognition as USA Wakeboard’s Coach of the Year. He was also named among the 100 most accomplished athletes from Sacramento, California.

The USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Foundation Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to water skiing and wake sports in the United States. Freddy Krueger’s induction in 2026 will celebrate not just his victories, but also his enduring influence on the sport and its community.
